Open space of the inner courtyard, surrounded by walls on all sides of residential buildings, doesn't always have to be neglected, and serve as a space for drying laundry or disposing clutter. With a little effort, this precious space can be turned into a true oasis filled with green vegetation.

A nicely paved, slightly elevated terrace, concrete benches and a table surrounded by greenness, will make the space between the walls of residential buildings an attractive place for socializing and relaxation. Go ahead and try, together with your neighbors, putting a breath of nature in the urban environment and at least partially remove the problem of alienation of the inhabitants of large cities. An area decorated in such a manner is the first step towards that.

Atrium garden or a garden in the inner courtyard, surrounded by residential area or a wall on all sides does not have to be uncared for, cluttered and completely unused, as is often the case today in the city courtyard gardens. In ancient Roman villas or medieval European monasteries such spaces were used as valuable garden space for pleasant moments of rest. They provided protection and intimate atmosphere and were very imaginatively decorated with various ornamental garden elements and various plant species. In our urban areas we often find these atrium spaces that are unused and abandoned.

There are big possibilities of decorating an atrium garden, and that is a true challenge for every landscape architect. A competent professional will surely make the best landscape project of that sometimes very narrow space. Still, with a good will, some joint efforts and funding, every such a space can be turned into a cozy spot for relaxation and fun in a very short period of time. With selection of garden elements, materials and plants, everything is possible. While decorating this garden we first decorate the basic elements of the garden like paves, paths, installing benches, fountain or some other decorative element. All these elements should fit harmoniously between themselves, and they should not clash with one another due to wrongful choice of materials, or due to size or style.

Then we start selecting, laying out and planting the selected plant species that have to fit the specific garden conditions with their arboricultural requirements. Elevated flower beds, a smaller decorative tree or a climbing plant will fit very nicely in such a space. Should you want to put some flower pots as well, choose a suitable shape pot that will fit nicely in the garden surroundings and that will be large enough so that the plants planted in it do not have to be watered too often. Keep in mind that pots will also serve as a decorative element of the garden, so do not settle for cheep solutions that ordinary plastic pots offer. Be sure to take into account how much time and effort are you all willing to invest in the future maintenance and keeping of this joint garden space. Use that as a guideline in choosing plants you will plant in the garden. Do not plant plants that need regular cutting, so that they do not outgrow the growing area planned for them. Choose and plant interesting and resistant multi annual plants that will survive periods of neglect or missed watering. A space decorated in such a manner will still never be a subject to deterioration as it will surely become a very pleasant spot for resting and socializing in the green environment, moments away from your residential home. Look at the photos in this text, use them as inspiration, and try this spring and summer to do something with the space you might have nearby that was up till now completely unused and forgotten. We wish you happy socializing and all the best with your work!
